Potty Training Hailey

So, I've been working with Hailey for about a month and have had a lot of ups and downs. The first five days were wonderful. There was only one accident, so we were very excited. She got a piece of candy every time. It was our leftover Christmas candy so it didn't bother me.

Since Hailey was doing so well and we were out of candy, I though she didn't need it anymore. She understood the progress and was getting good, why does she need a constant reward.

I was so wrong, after three days of frequent accidents, I made a sticker chart. She'll get to have ice cream with daddy if she can earn 10 stickers. She still wanted candy after every time but finally got the idea of the stickers. After she got the ice cream with daddy, it was her big chocolate bunny for a reward. I'm kinda running out of ideas for rewards but most importantly I'm trying of needing the rewards.

Hailey will have 2 or 3 good days in a row and then she just quits on me. She doesn't care when she pees her pants and usually doesn't tell me that she's wet. She has never said that she needs to go. Generally, I'll ask her if she needs to go, then tell her that she needs to go, finally I just give in because I don't want it to be a power issue, and she pees 1 minute later. In the morning I ask her if she wants to wear panties or pulls up and she almost always chooses the panties. She also picked out these pretty panties so that reward is out of the picture.

I guess what I really want to know is...
1) how long does it take to potty train a child?
2) how old was your child when they actually got it and didn't need reminding or rewards?
3) are the lapse normal and I should continue or is it a sign that she's just not ready?

Anniversary

Happy 4th Anniversary to us!!!
A lot has happened in the four years we've been married.

We both received our Bachelor's Degree from BYU-Idaho.
We've moved 3 times. (University Village, McIntosh, and Ridge Crest)
We have two children.
Nathan is just two tests away from completely his Master's Degree (He's retaking the written in 2 weeks).
We picked out and bought a car.
We paid off the car in 1 1/2 years.
We've driven to Iowa with two kids in the winter.

But most importantly...
We've gained more patience.
We understand and appreciate each other more.
We love each other more now and look forward to a long marriage together.

So happy anniversary to us!!!

Wii

We recently bought a Wii and the WiiFit game with the balance board.
The kids love it. Robert loves to get on the balance board and he has to hold a controller when someone plays. He cracks up when I do the boxing game.
Hailey loves seeing herself on the TV. The only game she can sort of do is baseball. On the WiiFit she wants to do hula-hoop which she calls it hoopy-hoopy.

Chloe, the little girl who I watch in the afternoon, is very patient with Hailey and she likes to do yoga with the WiiFit.

Weight Results

I was very good in following the food portion of the diet. Through it I learned that Icottage cheese and strawberries is okay and that I do not like salmon. (the texture is like tuna but the smell was everywhere and I had to take the scales off on one side, so I'm not going to do that again.)

I tried hard to get some exercise in but with being called after only 15min at the gym for a dirty diaper everyday for a week, things didn't work out very well. However, normally once the kids are settled in, I love doing cardio. I have fun an a neat machine that can be used as a stair stepper or like an elliptical. Then I try running on the treadmill.

Som on day 11, early morning I weighed and measured myself to know the results. I was just a little above 136. So I lost 7 pounds in 10 days. YEAH for me!!!

Now the real trick is to learn from this diet to apply it to everyday life (it has me cut out milk, bread, and noodles which is something I can't do forever.) I'll add more salads into our life and eat smaller portions. I needed this time to help my body to crave less and understand when I'm hungry and satisfied instead of stuffed.

So I'm excited for the changes I've made and am glad I did this diet. The biggest part is keeping the weight of and not rebounding.

Weight Struggles

This is going to be a long post with no pictures but it understand the happy ending you need a little background information.

When I was a baby, I won't eat and was considered a failure to thrive baby. To make a long story short, the problem was I was zinc deficient. I don't think this was really discovered until I was 8 years old but the solution was Flintstones vitamins. (I really didn't start swallowing pills until late high school early college.) As a kid I needed to have 30mg of Zinc everyday. When I was a bad girl and didn't take my vitamins for a week or so I didn't feel like eating but I also couldn't sleep and was crankier (though I wouldn't attempt to that at the time). I think it was in high school that I wasn't considered deficient but my body still could make it on it's own. So it's a life of vitamins for me.

I was always a very skinny girl because of it and could eat whatever I wanted without it changing my weight. However, I noticed in high school that was changing a little but still didn't care enough to try change my eating habits. I think when I was done with high school I was 115-120ish.

In college, I would bake all the time with/for my roommates (also this was a great distraction from homework.) I still didn't pay attention to what I was eating. I went to the gym mainly in the summer to gain body strength and because it gave me more energy. I had a couple of exercising buddies so it was fun.

I got married two years after I started college and weighted about 125/130. (I don't remember weighing myself often because I liked how I looked so it didn't matter how much I weighed) I was just barely needing to go into size 6 pants which to me was huge. About 5 months later I was pregnant with Hailey. My pre-pregnancy weight was 135lbs. I had horrible eating habits in this pregnancy. I eat tons of pickles in the first month (about 5 huge jars!!!). All I wanted the last two months was a corn dog, onions rings, and a small strawberry sundae from Dairy Queen. And since I was pregnant and I wanted it, I eat that at least 3 times a week.

Even with that as my eating habits I only gained 18lbs with Hailey. I gained more weight while trying to nurse Hailey because I ate ice cream every night. I noticed that none of my pregnancy clothes where fitting and my mom said I had to stop where maternity clothes. (In maternity clothes I was a size 4 pants and extra small shirts). I think it was that December (Hailey was born in June) when I had to go shopping for "real" clothes.

I did not like what was happening. I tried size 6 and 8 and nothing was fitting. I sadly went to size 10 and they were too tight in the thighs. I was wearing size 12 pants for a few months and had to have medium and large shirts. This was very hard for me. So with our tax refund that year, Nathan and I signed up to Gold's Gym and had a personal trainer for 2 months. I was trying to be more aware of what I was eating but really didn't know how to make changes in the food area.

However, within a year of Hailey's birth, I was back to my pre-pregnancy weight. I still had to wear bigger clothes since I didn't do much to trim my body.

A month later, I was pregnant with Robert. At most of my doctor's appointments that nurses kept telling me I wasn't putting on enough weight. So again I didn't pay attention to what I eat. I eat what I wanted. Fortunately, Robert made me hungry for lots of meat and fruit. I also lost my appetite for ice cream (though cake and cheesecake still sounded good to me). With that pregnancy I gained about 22lbs (most of the weight gain happened in the last 2 months).

Also I nursed Robert for 10 months and during this time I didn't know how to diet. I thought that weight would just melt off me because I was still nursing. I tried for 2 days to decrease what I was eating but Robert just didn't get enough milk so that had to stop. I went back to the gym when he was 6 months (that's when they take babies) but it was almost winter time and couldn't go often because of sick kids or being too tired.

One night while nursing Robert down stairs, I was watching infomercials and Mitch's Melt if Off! Program was on. It "promised" I would lose 5 lbs and 1 dress size in 3 days. I of course didn't believe the results but it was only $15 (and then about $15 in shipping and handling) so I thought why not and I bought it.

It had the three day diet/exercise plan and a 7 day plan. It also came with "Essential Boost Powerful Green Tea Extract Dietary Supplement" 30 day supply. (Which they will keep sending and charging you every month if you don't call and cancel.) I would do some of the exercising but not the food or pills.

Finally, Robert stopped nursing. So I went to the gym more, but still no weight changes. At Christmas time I was still 150lbs and was very discouraged by this. So on Monday I decided to really try this program. I needed something to change.

To help keep track of my progress we got a wii and the wii fit. (I played with this at a friends house once and loved it) Since the scale at the gym is broken (or got moved it an office, who knows?) I had not idea what I weighed.

In the two months since Robert stopped nursing I lost about 7 lbs. To do this I went to the gym almost ever weekday and was trying to add more vegetables in our diet.

The Saturday before I started my 10-day diet I got all the food. My biggest concern was that he wanted me to eat salads (I was never a big salad fan growing up) and fish (I don't like the smell of fish. I avoid seafood like the plague though I occasionally try shrimp just to remind myself that I don't like it). I knew I could get used to salad but I wasn't sure on the fish. I ran into a friend in walmart and she mentioned how she loves seafood. I asked her opinion on which fish I should get since I had the choice between flounder, trout, cod, and sole. Well, she mentioned that Tilapia had a very mild taste, so I got that one. (I had that meal last night and thought it was pretty good. So thank you Mary!!!!)

Unfortunately the food all together was close to $160. (for 10 days but only one person). Yikes I'm not sure I'll do that again, but this one time extensive is worth it if it'll help me learn how to eat better.

On Sunday night (around 9pm) I weighed and measured myself.

On Monday, I woke up at 6:00am to do my strength exercised with Mitch and the g-ball for an hour. I started the Dietary Supplement today and followed the diet plan exactly. I also went to the gym to do cardio for about 45minutes and did WiiFit for 1/2 hour.

On Tuesday, I again woke up at 6:00 and tried to do the cardio routine with Mitch but could only do half of it. But again I followed the diet, took the pill, went to the gym and spent an hour on the WiiFit. Today I discovered that plain oatmeal is disgusting (but I ate all of it) and that I strongly dislike cottage cheese.

On Wednesday, I decided I need more sleep so no workout with Mitch today. I went to the gym but was called in (15 mins into my workout) for a diaper change and Robert wouldn't let me go back (he is teething). However, I still followed my diet, ate and liked fish and continue to make a separate dinner for the family. I was very slow this day to do all I needed to keep up with the house work and kids.

So now it's Thursday and my three day challenge is done. I'm continuing with the 7day program but I needed to stop and re-weigh and measure myself.

This time I did it in the morning and the results are in.
Weight: 138lbs (I actually lost 5 lbs in 3 days)
Chest: I measured 4 in smaller
Waist: I measured 3 1/2 in smaller
Hips: I measured 2 in smaller.

YEAH!!!!!!

***Small disclaimer is that my first measurement was at night (9pm and we eat at 5:00 but still at night) and the second measurement was in the morning before I ate anything. Between last night (around 8) and this morning I lost 2 lbs according to the WiiFit. So measuring in the morning and at night does make a difference. I will continue to measure in the morning from now on.***

The trick???
Well I have been doing alot of exercises so that maybe part of it. I also have been taking the dietary supplement and that could have changed it (I'll continue taking it for the next 7 days then stop so I have more when I have to start this long progress again (hopefully after the next baby in 2-3years from now.)) Or is it the 60-90 oz of water a day??? (thank you hospital mugs)

I think the biggest impact is the food. I've been charting how many calories I'm doing each day on www.livestrong.com (it's completely free). On Monday it was 1012 calories, Tuesday 1,233 calories, and Wednesday 945 calories (I only had 2oz of fish when it said to have 6oz).

Am I still hungry? Kinda but not starving.
Have I figure out how to do this on my own? Not really but will when the 7 days are up.
Will I keep my calories that low? No, I'll try to stay between 1200-1500.
What's my weight goal? I want to be 135 by the end of the 10 day trial. My idea weight is 120-125 and size is 6. I think I can reach that one by July.

Look for the next weight update in a week.

Baby's Walking --Sorta

I vaguely remember that days you we could just put you down where ever and you actually STAYED STILL.
But of course, we know that tummy time is important and you did very well in the stage.
You graduated to sitting up on your own and we were happy. Please can you stay in that stage? Nope! you started pulling yourself up and getting into things we trained Hailey to not touch.
And you started crawling and nothing was safe.
But mommy's arms are getting tired of carrying you. You have heavy. So we working on walking.
Then you went through this crazy stage you where you would squat. (I wish I could do that!) From that position you would stand up all by yourself. Way to go!!!
I think you just like the attention, so you wouldn't let go of our fingers while you walked.
Finally you graduated and are now walking all by yourself. You're such a big boy. While learning to walk you are still in a strange crawling stage where you use one leg and drag the left one behind you.

(This is a video so for those who are getting the emails, go to my blog's website to see the video play.)

However, your story doesn't stop there. You only walk half the time and for the past three days you hardly walk at all. I'm not sure why. It could be the bruise on your big toe but how did it get there?

Hailey didn't walk all the time until she was 13 months. So, baby, you only have three weeks left to figure this walking thing out completely. Do you really want to be passed up by a girl?

Robert's Birthday Party

Happy Birthday Baby!!!!
Here's the yummy chocolate cake that mommy made and decorated with blue frosting and sprinkles.
And your friend Brian came to celebrate. (Of course he brought his parents too, Nick and Jessie) Brian's 1st birthday was just a couple of weeks ago.
The newly weds (Darlene and Wayne) also wanted to eat your cake and spend time with you.
Okay baby, it's time to appreciate all the work mommy put into this. But you really don't care about how it looks you just want to know why everyone is singing and looking at you.
So I put the first first piece on your tray and in seconds it was gone. You are a get eater. You dug right in. However you were pretty disgusting when you were done so we had to pause everything to quickly give you a bath. **Side note at the bottom to explain the band-aid.
Here is a great pose by all your presents. You are a lucky boy.Big sister needed to help you a little. It's a little hard to understand what to do on your first birthday but don't worry next year you can do it all by yourself.
Yeah it's Pooh Bear!!!
Mommy got you a fun toy with animals and a slide, but you just like sitting on it.
Yeah you finally were able to tear some of the wrapping paper.
So here is your big loot of the day, baby. You have tons of clothes now that you're bigger and a few good toys. Happy Birthday my sweet baby boy.

**Side note: Even though your birthday was on the 22nd we celebrated it on Tuesday. You also had a doctor's appointment the same day. First they weighed (18lbs 8oz) and measured (28 1/2in) you. Then you got an iron test in your toe. The doctor came in and you just didn't like him. He kept poking at you and made you stay still which is one thing you HATE. Then the nurse came back to give you two shots in your legs. Finally I had to put clothes back on you. (You hate clothes) However, the thing that bugged you the most that you kept screaming about was the band-aid on your toe. Everything was better when I took it off.
